Last year, IFPC acquired a disused parcel of land in Steen Close from Brentwood Council with the vision of transforming it into a community orchard. Clearance and fencing works were carried out, laying the foundations for a green space that will bring long-term benefits to local residents.

The aim has always been to create an orchard featuring heritage fruit trees – not only as a source of fresh produce but also as a space for schools and the wider community to enjoy, learn from, and help maintain. Councillors and volunteers have already stepped forward to support the project, showing the strong local interest in creating something lasting for the parish.

Now, the project is entering its next phase. Ground works have begun on the new Community Orchard, with the site being levelled and seeds planted to prepare the ground for the orchard. Apple trees are planned to be planted later this month.

IFPC’s working group is planning an official opening in the near future – please keep an eye out for updates on the final arrangements.

The orchard will provide a welcoming green space for the community and support biodiversity through new tree planting. The fruit trees were sourced from the East of England Apples and Orchards Project, who offer helpful pruning classes for volunteers (a great way to learn more if you’re keen to help.)

Further details about the opening event, including timings and activities, will be shared as soon as they are confirmed.
