IFPC installed Vehicle Activated Signs

Residents will be aware of the two speed indication signs that have been installed at the entrances of Pine Drive and Deepdene, recording car speeds entering the village centre. These were installed by IFPC following concerns of vehicles speeding along the High Street, in excess of the 20mph speed limit. These signs not only show the driver their speed but also record the speed of every car that passes them, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. IFPC installed these signs in order to gather this data as evidence to present to the Police and Essex Highways. It is hoped that this data will justify further enforcement action to be taken.

The level of data collected is huge but you might be interested in the headline results from the 13th November 2024 – 15th January 2025. Interestingly, the speed results were almost identical for both sites.

• Total number of vehicles recorded in this period from both signs – 428,683
• Average speed – 21.8mph
• 85th percentile speed – 27.5mph (the speed at or below which 85% of the vehicles travelled)
• 50th percentile speed – 21.6mph (the speed at or below which 50% of the vehicles travelled)
• 10 mph pace interval – 15mph – 25mph (the range of speed at which the majority of cars were travelling past Deepdene or Park Drive)

IFPC are lobbying for similar devices to be installed along Fryerning Lane and Stock Lane.
